Smart Shades FAQ

What is the remote control? How does it work?

+

The remote control is a small wireless handheld controller that operates your motorized shades, blinds or drapes. It can control multiple individual shades or groups of shades, and has an easy-to-use interface.

How many shades can I operate with my remote control?

+

Remote controls can operate up to fifteen shades or groups of shades, plus it has an option to operate all shades simultaneously.

Does the same remote work with all Smith & Noble motorized treatments?

+

Our standard 15 channel remote is compatible with our motorized Shades, Blinds and Drapery Hardware with the exception of Day/Night Cellular Shades and Horizontal Cellular Shades with motorized top down/bottom up lift. They require a different, specially designed fifteen channel remote control. Please note: If you coordinate bottom up Cellular Shades with Day/Night or top down/bottom up Cellular Shades both remotes will be required for operation.

How many remotes do I need?

+

We suggest you order one remote per room of motorized treatments. A single remote can control individual or multiple blinds or shades, or multiple groups of blinds or shades. If you plan to operate your shades using our Smart Shades app, a remote is still required to set up or reset limits or reprogram the shade settings. Please note: All motorized Shades, Blinds and Drapery Hardware use our standard remote with the exception of top down/bottom up Cellular Shades and Day/Night Cellular Shades — they a different, specially designed remote.

What is the range of the remote control?

+

Remote controls are effective up to 150 feet away from the product they are operating.

Can I control groups of shades or blinds with a single remote?

+

Yes. You can use the multi-channel remote control to operate individual or groups of window treatments. You can program each channel on the remote to operate a single treatment, or to a select group of treatments that you wish to control simultaneously.

Can I program my shades to open to a particular height?

+

Yes. You can customize your motorized shades to open (or close) to your desired height. Each motorized shade comes with pre-programmed height limits, which you can reset using your remote control. A Favorite position can also be programmed using your remote control without changing the existing pre-programmed height limits. Download and review the motorization programming guide for the type of shade you purchased at smithandnoble.com/installing.

How does tilt & lift motorization work on Wood Blinds?

+

The motor lifts (raises and lowers) the blind and rotates the blind slats open or closed.

Will I damage my motorized treatment if I try to operate it manually?

+

Shades and blinds cannot be operated manually. Attempting to operate these treatments manually could cause permanent damage to the product. Drapery Hardware can be operated manually. Gently pull on the drapery and it will operate without remote.

Will Wi-Fi interfere with the operation of my motorized treatments?

+

No. Wi-Fi and other wireless devices should not interfere with your motorized window treatments.

I have two identical shades next to each other. Will they move at the same speed?

+

Because each shade motor functions independently, it’s possible that they may operate at slightly different speeds. Their speed will depend on many factors, including friction forces, battery type and charge strength.

What is the power source for my product?

+

All Motorized products are powered by a rechargeable motor. They can also be left plugged in if a power source is nearby and it will not damage the motor.

How do I know when it’s time to charge my treatment?

+

Your treatments will begin moving at half speed, or beep when operated. This is your indication that it’s time to charge your shade. If you have the Smart Shades Hub, you may also view the remaining battery life for each product on the App.

What kind of batteries does my remote require?

+

All remote controls require a 3V battery (CR2450). The wall switch requires a 3V battery (CR2430)..

Where is the charge port for my shade?

+

For standard and heavy duty motors (majority of products), the charging port will be located on the headrail. For narrow motors, the charging port will be located on the external battery pack.

How long is the cord for the charger?

+

The charger cord on Shades and Blinds is 16’ and the charger cord on Drapery Hardware is 10’.

How many charger cords do I need?

+

We recommend one charger cord for every three treatments in a room.

How long does it take to recharge my treatment?

+

If your treatment’s battery is completely drained, it takes about 6 hours to charge completely.

How does the Solar Panel work?

+

The solar panel provides a constant trickle chart to the rechargeable battery. It performs best in regular direct sunlight.

Will I still need to charge my shade if I have a Solar Panel?

+

You may still need to charge your shade even when using a Solar Panel. The Solar Panel provides a trickle charge to the battery and helps to prolong the lift of the charge. In some cases and applications, it will maintain the charge indefinitely. The life of the charge is subject to variables such as size of shade, frequency of use, amount of direct sunlight exposure, etc.

Where do I install the Solar Panel?

+

The Solar Panel is installed inside the window either on the glass or with brackets to the inner window frame. It performs best in regular direct sunlight and without obstructions.

Are there restrictions to where I can install the Solar Panel?

+

The Solar Panel performs best in regular direct sunlight and without obstructions. We do not recommend using the Solar Panel on windows with triple layered glass, tints, awnings, deep eves, insect screens or obstructions

Will the Solar Panel be visible?

+

Yes. The Solar Panel will be visible from the outside or streetside view of the window. Depending on where the Solar Panel is installed, it may also be visible from the inside when the motorized treatment is raised all the way up.

Which Smith & Noble Smart Shades products can I control with Alexa or Google Home?

+

Any Smith & Noble motorized window treatment connected to the Smith & Noble Smart Shades App via the Smart Hub can be controlled using Alexa or Google voice commands.

How many Smart Shades can I control with the app?

+

Once paired to the Smart Hub, the App can accommodate up to 150 motorized shades and up to 20 Scenes and Timers.

What is a Smart Hub?

+

The Smart Hub enables use of the Smith & Noble Smart Shades App. The Smart Hub connects to a Wi-Fi router and communicates with Smith & Noble motorized shades and blinds. It allows control of your Smart Shades from anywhere in the world. A 2.4 GHz network is required.

What is the range of the Smart Hub?

+

Shades need to be placed within a range of 98 feet from the Smith & Noble Smart Hub. As with any wireless signal, the range can be longer or shorter depending on the conditions and environment such as the size of the house, number of stories and number of walls or obstructions.

How many Smart Hubs do I need?

+

For most homes, only one Smart Hub is needed. However, homes over 3,000 square feet and/or large multi-level homes may require additional hubs.

Can I control my Smart Shades with the Amazon or Google devices?

+

Yes! With the Smart Hub and app, Smith & Noble Smart Shades can be voice-controlled using Amazon Alexa and Google Home products, and you can even include the shades on your favorite Routines.

How much does the Smith & Noble Smart Shades App cost?

+

The app is a free download. However, a Smart Hub is required for the app to operate the shades.

Which mobile platforms and devices are compatible with the Smith & Noble Smart Shades App?

+

The Smart Shades App is available for Apple® iOS (running version 12.0 and newer) and Android™ mobile devices (running version 6 and newer).

Do I need a Wi-Fi connection to use the Smart Hub and App?

+

Yes. The Smith & Noble Smart hub requires a 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi network.

Do I need an internet connection to set up the app to control my shades?

+

Yes, an internet connection is required. The app will connect to the Smart Hub using a 2.4 GHz wireless network. An internet connection is needed in order to operate the app from outside the home and to keep the time, date and firmware up to date.

What is the difference between 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz Wi-Fi frequencies?

+

The primary differences between the two frequencies are range (coverage) and bandwidth (speed). The 2.4 GHz band provides coverage at a longer range but transmits data at slower speeds. The 5 GHz band provides less coverage but transmits data at faster speeds. Most smart home devices utilize the 2.4 GHz band because it is better suited for longer ranges and transmission through walls and solid objects. 2.4 GHz is better if you need more range on your devices or you have a lot of walls or other objects in the areas where you need coverage.

Which Wi-Fi frequency do I need to pair the Smart Hub?

+

The Smith & Noble Smart hub requires a 2.4 GHz wireless frequency band because 2.4 GHz offers coverage for further distances than a 5 GHz frequency band. The Smart Hub cannot be set up on a 5 GHz frequency.

Will the Smart Hub work with my 5 GHz Wi-Fi?

+

The Smart Hub requires 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi. If your router is only set to 5 GHz band, you will need to split out the bands to make the 2.4 GHz band visible before the Smart Hub can be setup. If you are unsure about how to do this, please contact your wireless router provider or refer to your router’s instruction manual. This will need to be done prior to beginning the hub set up process.

What if I have both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz Wi-Fi available?

+

The Smart Hub requires 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi. If your Wi-Fi router is set up with both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz under the same name, the hub should connect automatically to the correct frequency. If the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands have different names, you will need to select the 2.4 GHz band in order to connect the hub.

Can I operate my Smart Shades from anywhere in the world using the Smith & Noble Smart Shades app on my Apple® or Android™ device?

+

Yes. You can adjust your motorized shades, blinds and drapery hardware from anywhere using the Smith & Noble Smart Shades App as long as your Smart Hub is connected to your home’s internet network.

What is a Scene?

+

A Scene is a combination of pre-programmed actions for your motorized shades, blinds and drapery hardware. Scenes allow you to customize a series of actions together to create an event and to easily adjust the lighting in your home throughout the day. Scenes can be controlled on the app or by voice control.

Will my Scenes and Timers work even if my mobile device is not at home?

+

Yes. All pre-set Scenes and Timers are stored in the Smart Hub. That means, your Scenes and Timers will continue to operate your Smart Shades at the programmed time to the pre-set position even if the mobile device is not in the home.

Do Scenes and Timers automatically change for Daylight Savings Time?

+

Yes. Scenes and Timers will adjust for Daylight Savings Time automatically if the Smart Hub is connected to the internet and to the app. The internal clock in the Smart Hub will update to the current date and time.

What does the Smith & Noble Smart Shades App do with my personal information?

+

Your privacy is very important to us. Information you provide in the Smith & Noble Smart Shades App is not used or disclosed without your consent. We do offer you the ability to integrate Smith & Noble Smart Shades with third party applications such as Google Home and Amazon Alexa. If you choose to integrate with a third-party application, that third party will likely receive some of your personal data either provided directly by you or provided by us with your consent.

Do I need to use a surge protector with my Smart Hub? Do I need to use a surge protector with my Smart Hub?

+

Surge protectors defend against power or voltage spikes that could cause damage to your electronic devices and gadgets. You may want to use a surge protector to protect your Smart Hub if your home is subject to frequent power spikes, brownouts or blackouts.
